The Hidden Safari Gem
Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is often overshadowed by the northern safari circuit, but it offers exceptional wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. Known as “Little Serengeti”, its open savannas resemble those of the Serengeti and provide an excellent opportunity to see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and buffalo. The Mkata Floodplain, at the heart of the park, is the best place to spot wildlife, especially during the dry season when animals gather around water sources.
One of Mikumi’s highlights is its diverse landscapes, which include baobab-dotted plains, rolling hills, and miombo woodlands. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of animals, including the rare wild dogs and sable antelopes. Bird lovers will also appreciate the presence of over 400 bird species, from African fish eagles to colorful lilac-breasted rollers.
Mikumi is one of the most accessible parks in Tanzania, making it an ideal safari destination for travelers with limited time. It is just a 4-5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam, making it a perfect weekend safari getaway. The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October) when wildlife congregates around water sources, offering incredible game viewing opportunities.
